A serpentine drive of around two hours from Srinagar through scenic landscape takes the visitors to the world famous tourist resort of Gulmarg.

At an elevation of 2690 meters, the bowl-shaped valley has beautiful meadows and endless pastures besides a thick forest cover on the fringes, enchanting the visitors.

The sprawling meadows of Gulmarg is not a new tourist destination as it has been exploited around in 1400 when kings like Yousuf Shah Chak and Jahangir used to visit here frequently for holidaying.

Since then the resort has been able to grab the attention of world class tourism.

Gulmarg witnesses good tourist rush in both summer and winter seasons.

The summer season attracts huge tourist rush from across India to get respite from the scorching heat of plains and enjoy their holidays here.

Similarly in winters, tourists from western countries come for skiing on powder snow.

The tourists mostly from western countries visit Gulmarg during winter months for adventure sports. They stay here for two months and enjoy the adventure tourism facilities on white blanket of snow.

Cable Car

The Cable Car (Gandola) is a major tourist attraction in Gulmarg. It takes the visitors to the height of 3950 meters to give an opportunity to step on the snowy mountains at Affarwat summit besides catching the aerial glimpses of Nanga Prabat, the third highest mountain of the world.

Earlier Nanga prabat was the only USP of Gulmarg and tourists used to visit here to see it. The Gandola has made the job easy and one can easily reach there now.

Gulmarg also owns the oldest ski club set up by captain Masen in 1948 besides the highest Golf course of the world.

For adventure tourism, Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) has introduced new adventure sports activities on the lines of facilities available in countries like France and Switzerland.

This year GDA has introduced Mountain Biking, Zorball and all terrain vehicles to add to new dimensions to winter tourism.

Mountain biking is a joy ride on rough serpentine trails of Gulmarg. GDA has put these bikes on rent for the adventure lovers. The all-terrain vehicles are another feature to look out for.

For the tourists particularly from western countries, the resort is packed with complete entertainment in winters. Recently, CNN International described Gulmarg as seventh best Ski spot in the world.

Tourists interested in skiing can run down upto five kilometers over the thick blanket of snow. Other traditional and popular sports are also available for tourists.

In an order to train the people in adventure sports, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India has set up Indian Institute of Mountaineering.

The institute is meant for people who want to hone skills in water rafting, skiing, mountaineering and other adventure sports.

With so much to offer, it is no wonder that Gulmarg witnessed nearly six lakh tourists according to official estimates.
